Silas is now 4 years old. It was so much fun to celebrate this birthday with him, as he is old enough now to really understand what comes with a birthday. Multiple weeks before his birthday, he wanted to tell everyone he met that he was going to be 4 soon...and "when I'm done being 4 then I'll be 5!". He really looks up to a boy named Jakob from his preschool, and Jakob is 5, so...there you have it.
On his birthday, Silas was the first one to wake up. He got up and went looking around the house, but then went back into his bed, knowing that we would come in and wake him up with a birthday song. We ate breakfast and he opened his presents from us. He got some hotwheels things, as well as a new Spiderman costume, to replace the one he had outgrown. When he first opened the Spiderman costume, he just kept looking for a mask. His old costume did not have a mask, and he was specifically wishing for a Spiderman costume with a mask for his birthday. After examining the costume for some time, he said in a slightly dissapointed voice, "There is no mask." Then we showed him that is was hanging on the side, and when he saw it his face lit up instantly and he had to try it on right away.
The next few hours felt very long for Silas. Every time Silas heard a noise that at all resembled a door closing, he would run to the front door and look out to see if any guests had come yet! Finally at 2:30pm, guests started arriving to celebrate with us, and Silas was as excited as ever. He told everyone what he had gotten for presents and that he was now 4 YEARS OLD!
The rest of the day Silas was just so happy. He got lots of small legos and his two older cousins loved helping him put all the new pieces together. The three of them played with the Legos most of the day, and you could see how much fun Silas had with the big boys. After birthday cake, a Spiderman cake that I made to my best ability, we went outside to play with the bean bag toss game that we had made. It was a lot of fun, and the kids could easily play as well.
For dinner Silas had chosen to have pizza, and we ate a lot of pizza. Silas specifically wanted a pasta pizza, so we made a kids pizza with spaghetti noodles on it!
Before the guests when home there was a little more time to enjoy his new toys and games. Around 9pm the guests left and Silas was still bouncing off the walls with excitement. He had had an absolutely wonderful day!
The following Monday, Silas celebrated his birthday at pre-school with carrot muffins and watermelon. The kids sang a happy birthday song for him, sent off rockets (yeah a tradition they have there) and Silas got to hand out the muffins to each kid. You could tell he enjoyed the attention he got that morning!
A final fun story to tell. We had been talking to Silas for a few months about going to kids church by himself when he turned 4. He had been wanting us to go with him since he started when he was three, so we thought it'd be great for everyone if he could start going by himself. The day after his birthday was a Sunday, and all day Silas talked about going to kids church by himself that day. Søren and I were a bit skeptical but Silas seemed determined, so I guess we would just have to see what would happen. When the song for kids church started playing during the service, Silas jumped out of his seat and ran up to the front of the church. He sat straight up on the steps and just sat there with the biggest, and most proud looking face and little boy could every have. Søren and I were so proud of our big boy. When he came back 40 minutes later, he was so excited to tell us all about what he did...even though church was still going on! :-)
