Merry Christmas
Well it was my first Christmas in Denmark and it was very nice. The days up to Christmas I was a little bit up and down. Sometimes I really missed family and friends and the MN snow, and other times I was just thinking about how great it was that I was going to spend Christmas with Søren!
But Christmas Eve came and it was wonderful. Søren and I went up to his sister Ulla and her husband Peter's house. Søren's mom came also and of course our two nephews Lukas and Nikolaj so we were a nice group! We got there around lunch time and had a fabulous lunch. Then we relaxed, watched some Christmas cartoons and played a "Cars" computer game with Lukas. After that it was time for church. We all drove together except for Peter beacause he had to put the duck in the oven and the flæskesteg on the grill so it would be done when we got back.
The church service was nice, of course it was packed more than normal, but there were some nice Christmas songs and a good sermon. After church we came back and made the final preparations for dinner. Well Søren and the others helped with dinner.
I think I was mostly playing with Lukas.
Soon it was time to eat and it was a feast!! We had duck and pork, two kinds of potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and potato chips! (Yes normal salted potato chips, they are used for fancy meals in DK, the opposite of a football game snack!) It was so delicious and Søren and I both had 2 big helpings!

For dessert we had the traditional "ris ala monde" and Søren mom got the big almond! But as the grandmother she is, she gave it to Lukas so that he won the prize! Anyway, after dessert we cleaned up and were ready to take part in the next Christmas tradition. DANCING AROUND THE TREE! We each had some hymnals and danced/walked around the tree singing Christmas hymns for about 20 minutes. When we were done singing we all took each others hands and ran around the entire house, in and out of every room singing "Now its Christmas again, Now its Christmas again." It was a different but fun tradition!

But now it was Christmas and we were ready to open presents. Lukas and Ulla handed them out to all of us and Søren and I were both suprised about how many presents there were. It took us about 1½ hours to open all the presents as we opened only one at a time and took time to ooh and ahh after every present!!

At about midnight we were done and it was Lukas' bedtime. The rest of us stayed up and played the new board game that I got from Søren! It was fun and we were glad we were spending the night because we went to bed around 1:45. It was a wonderful day with great food, family and fun!
The next morning, Christmas morning, we ate breakfast together and cleaned up all the wrapping paper we left in a huge pile from the night before.

Søren and I ate a quick lunch before hitting the road. I was playing horn for the church service and had to be there early to practice.
The church service was great! During practice I heard that we were playing "O Holy Night" for the postlude. One of the musicians brothers was going to come and sing with us but the musicians needed to practice the song still so I sang with just to help and afterwards they insisted that I sing the first verse! It was fun to sing such a beautiful song and also as a duet.
After church Søren and I came home and Santa had visited. Our stockings were filled with little goodies and we happily opened them. I was happy to have some presents to open on the 25th and Søren, well he always likes opening presents, so it was great.

We spent the rest of the night together in our home, relaxing and just spending time together. It was all wonderful!
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas too!!!!

Music is in the air!
Just last week I played French Horn for a very large Christmas concert in one of the large cities "nearby". I played with the same orchestra last year but after moving farther away I stopped. However they needed an extra horn player for their Christmas concert so I said yes.
It was so fun to play again and especially Christmas music. It was a family Christmas concert so there were also kids involved. And when I say kids I mean kids from over 20 different schools in the area. In all they made a 400 person choir and sung a variety of songs together. Some songs with the orchestra and some songs with more of a rock band. It was a really cool experience to hear and see so many kids up on stage! Søren was sweet enough to come with to the concert and take some pictures even though he heard almost the same concert last year! But I think it was the Pirates of The Carribean medley we played that attracted him.

It was a busy week having the concert and also finishing up at school. The last week of school before vacation was a bit special. Both Thursday and Friday morning the students had to clean from 8am until 12, and of course the teachers were also helping. It was a long time to keep teenagers motivated with cleaning but in the end the school sparkled and we felt we had accomplished something! Søren had Christmas vacation already after Thursday and as the schools sound tech he was at the school Friday + Saturday to help with the sound. Then on Saturday we had a special Christmas program of our own a school for the students' families. My choir sang a few songs and I played a horn and piano duet with one of my collegues. It was a nice end to the first half year of school but it is even more nice that we are officially on Christmas vacation until 2009!

Christmas Lunches
Hello all! Hope you are enjoying a wonderful Christmas season! I know we are!I do believe I have mentioned before that Danes like to eat! Well its true and what better time of year than Christmas to eat a lot. And seeing as I am writing before Christmas its not just on Christmas day that they eat a lot. They arrange special days up to Christmas, (sometimes already in November) where it is about eating. They call it Julefrokost or Christmas Lunch. It is a tradition for any one who considers themselves a "group" to hold a Christmas Lunch. For example, with the people you work with, with the people you sing in a choir with, with the people you go to school with, or have gone to school with, with the people at your church, for the people you live by and whatever either type of group you can think of. If there is a way to eat more then they will find it!!!
Well anyway, Søren and I have been to 2 Christmas Lunches already this year. Last weekend it was with our work and just yesterday we had a Christmas lunch with our bible study group. They were both beautiful parties with fun, friends and amazing food. Some of the traditional foods are Herring with a Curry salad on brown bread, Fish filets with lemon, A kind of pork roast, warm red caggage, sausages, liver paste, brown potatoes, and much more. It is all pretty tasty! But a lot of food!!! Because there is of course also dessert and coffee with cake afterwards. The typical Christmas lunch dessert is a dessert made with rice, almond pieces and cream. Then you add a warm fruity sauce to top it off. Delicious in smaller portions!
Unfortunately there are no more official Christmas Lunches for us this year but I think we will be full until next year anyway, so its probably a good thing!

Jule-hygge "Christmas fun"
This weekend we were "home" in Esbjerg with Søren's mom and family for some Christmas festivities. It was meant to be a weekend of relaxing and enjoying each others company and it was. We started Saturday making special Danish Christmas candy...maybe you could call it Konfetti?! I don't know what you would say in English, but it is small balls of marcipan and nougat and then you can decorate it and top it with different things. It was a new tradition for me but it was very fun and tasty!

Our nephew Lukas and I working on a special batch.
That night we enjoyed an amazing dinner, played a board game and watched a movie together. We also enjoyed some Gløgg and Æbelskiver which are also traditional Danish Christmas treats.
Sunday was also a great day. We went to church in the morning and after yet another amazing meal Søren and I went into the town and shopped a bit. It was so festive with music and lights and fresh winter air. It was really a Christmas feel. When we got back we played the famous PACKAGE GAME... This is a simple present game where if you roll a 6 with a die you get to pick a present. When all the presents are gone everytime you roll a 6 you can steal from someone else. The fun thing is that there are many presents, more than one to each and sometimes you have a huge pile of presents and other times you have none. All of a sudden the timer will go off and then whatever presents you have in front of you are yours to keep. It was Lukas that made out the best this year, but Søren and I each came away with 2 gifts.
All in all it was a great weekend. Now just one week more and we have almost 2 weeks of vacation. Can't wait can't wait!!!

Happy Birthday Søren
I am now only 1 year older than Søren... At least for 8 more months! We celebrated Søren's 24th birthday on Thursday. It was fantastic, Søren didn't have to go to school that day and I didn't have to work until 10:45 so I was able to sleep in and still make him a birthday breakfast, complete with Puffy Pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon.

As Danish tradition he opened all his presents in the morning and I had the neighbor put out Danish flags to celebrate!
That evening we went out to eat at a Chinese/Mongolian Barbeque buffet restaurant. It was delicious and we we're very full. Then I had a suprise for Søren. I took him to the bowling alley and we had an hour to bowl as much as we wanted. The extra catch for the birthday boy was that for every strike he got he also recieved a smaller present! At first I think he was a bit psyched out by the pressure but he ended up doing really well and after 4 rounds he had won almost all the presents. It was a fun night!

Old Town Denmark
We've been very busy with Christmas festivities ever since Thanksgiving. Last weekend we were again on the road visiting friends and family. Friday we visited my old roomate from the first year I lived in Denmark. Her and her husband live on the east coast of Jutland so we made it an overnight trip. We had such a good time, just talking and reminiscing. A few weeks earlier we had talked with them about going on a ski trip together. They had been looking into some places in France and had us look at the place they were thinking about. Well that night we began talking about the ski trip again, we looked at the website and yeah spontaneously booked the trip. So Søren and I are going to take a week long ski trip to the Alps in France in February! Exciting!
Anyway, Saturday we headed a little more north to a town called Århus. Søren's dad lives near there and had been storing our winter tires for us which we needed to get put on. We decided to make a day out of it and go to the "Old Town" that is in Århus. We had heard that it is very festive around Christmas time. It was very fun and interesting to be there. In the "Old Town" you can see how Denmark was in the olden days. The old houses, the post office, horse and buggies and much more. They also have people dressed up like the way it was back then. What was also really cool was that they had a special Christmas display where they showed how the Christmas traditions have grown since the 1600's. It was interesting to see and read about.

Thanksgiving and such.
Well this past weekend we have had lots of Thanksgiving fun! On the actual day of Thanksgiving, Søren and I had our friends Jette and Carl over for a mini-Thanksgiving feast! We made stuffing and turkey breast (we actually cut a slit in the turkey breast and stuffed it with the stuffing just to see if it worked!) mashed potatoes, green beans and of course pumpkin pie for dessert! The interesting part about the pumpkin pie was that I made it from a real pumpkin. After searching high and low throughout Denmark I could not find pumpkin in a can anywhere, so it was the only choice left. It was quite a bit of work, but it turned out really great, and our friends liked it even though they were a little skeptical at first. After the feast we sat and watched some good old Thanksgiving Day Football! It was an enjoyable Thanksgiving, even if we did have to go to work!
The Pumpkin Pie process

1) Cut and gut the pumpkin

2) Steam the pumpkin pieces

3)Mix it with a lot of stuff, make a crust and pour the pumkin into the pie! Cook for an hour and...

The weekend only went up from there. Friday night we went to Esbjerg, where Søren is from and where his Mom lives now. We had an after party for the Show I was in and Søren was able to spend time with his Mom. I had a wonderful time seeing the Show friends again. Its always fun to be together with theater people! They think of the craziest things! Someone wrote an 8 page song about all the funny stuff that had happened during the show. It was really fun!
Then Saturday we drove up to Aalborg (3 hours north in Jutland) for Thanksgiving round 2! Our friends Jim and Maria live there and they are also a Dane/American couple like us. Our other friend Jenny who is also from the US came too so that we could celebrate Thanksgiving, American style!
Before the feast could begin we we're asked to have an interview for the newspaper of the Christian Organization Jenny and Jim work for. The four of us, Jim, Jenny, Søren and I were all on Watermark together and have decided to move to Denmark so this reporter asked if he could interview us for an article. We were asked questions about why we moved to Denmark, what we do and what we think of living in Denmark. It was fun and kind of exciting. The reporter also thought that it was interesting that we were celebrating Thanksgiving together and took some funny pictures of us!

Later that night 3 more Americans came over to enjoy the Thanksgiving feast. Jim and Maria had met them in Aalborg and invited them, knowing that it is weird not celebrating Thanksgiving as an American! It was so fun, we had never met them before but we had our country in common so it was easy! It was a great meal and yet again another great Thanksgiving!
Well now that Thanksgiving is officially over I guess it is time to decorate for Christmas. Søren and I used Sunday evening to set up the few Christmas decorations we have. It was really fun and exciting to get into the Christmas mood! We just need some snow now!!!

It just isn't Christmas without a snow village!

Driving
In general we are using our car a lot. Søren drives an hour each way to school 4 days a week, and although I can just walk to school, all my freetime activities require driving a minumum of 30 minutes each way. In fact we have to drive 15 minutes when we want to get some groceries, so you can say we are glad that we bought a new car last spring that gets about 56 miles to the gallon! (see below!)
This past weekend was no different, we were all over Denmark visiting friends and family. Saturday we were on the East Coast of the penninsula Jutland visiting our friends Thorkild and Janni. We live on the West Coast of Jutland and in US terms it would be crazy to drive to the other coast for one evening. However, in the country of Denmark it is only an hour drive from one coast to the other. It was fun to see them again, they were both at our wedding so it was fun to talk wedding memories. Then Sunday we drove north over an hour to be with our nephew Lukas on his 4th birthday! Lukas was in such a great mood the entire day, we played with him and his new toys all day and I think I had as much fun as Lukas did!
The other exciting news is that I was able to play my horn again! The orchestra that I played in last year called me up and said they needed an extra horn to play for the Christmas concert. With the musical choir on a break I was excited to be able to play again. I had an hour drive to rehearsal but it was so fun! I guess I missed playing more than I thought! And as an extra bonus they said they would pay me $250 even though I had said yes before the money offer! So you can't beat that!
Well that's all for now. Tomorrow we will be celebrating Thanksgiving (even though we don't get the day off) and watching some good American Football! We will be sure to post pictures!!

Lets go Vikings!
So Søren and I have been pretty busy this past week. It is the 25th anniversary of the boarding school where we work so we've been busy planning and putting on a big party. I was in charge of the choir and what they should sing for the party. I ended up making, with help from my friend Kirsten, a mini-musical using Abba songs to tell the history of the school, how it was founded, expanded, etc. It was a really fun week singing Abba songs, working with drama and putting it all together. We were lucky to have a full "rock-band" to accompany us and by the final rehearsal it sounded gerat. It was a huge success, we recieved many good comments and had a lot of fun. Søren was busy controlling the sound so it was fun to work together in a way!
The whole week we were looking forward to Sunday where we would finally have some time to each other and to relax. After the big party on Saturday night, where there were over 700 people, Søren and I slept in late, went to Church (it doesn't start until 3:30pm) and came home and got ready for the big game!! THE VIKINGS WERE ON DANISH TELEVISION! We had been excited all week. We put on our purple, pulled out our Viking cups and watched the Vikings.... it was fun to get into the game together! But how were the results??....
During
After..... Yeah the results were not exactly to our liking... oh well.

Hockey anyone?
This past weekend Søren and I have had just a fantastic weekend together. We had a lot of time together, just relaxing and not worrying about school or work. We even went on a date Saturday night. We tried a new mongolian barbeque restuarant and went and saw the new James Bond movie! It was great!

Mary shooting and scoring!

By the time Sunday came around we decided we needed to do something a little more active. We agreed to go for a walk like we always do, but then Søren proposed a better idea. The students were gone for the weekend and we could go over to the school and play rollerhockey on the outdoor basketball court. So we did, we skated around for over an hour, passing and trying to score on eachother. Then Søren, again I say Søren, decided we should have a little shootout competition. We would play 5 rounds with 5 shots each round. Whoever scored 3 goals or more in each round got one point and whoever had the most points at the end won! And by winning that meant that they got to pick what was for dinner and the loser had to make it for them!
The game started slow, neither of us getting a point the first round. But then Søren went ahead in round two. Round 3 +4 I was on fire and Søren couldn't stop me. We went into the 5th round tied. I scored 3 in round 5, so it was just up to me to stop him. It went into the 4th shot where I stopped him and won!!!!! Yay... Lasagne it was!
